Highland's Bowl - The Best Skiing in North America

The forty minute hike on the ridge up to Highland's Bowl, is worth the unbeatable ski down. With steep, open terrain and the best snow, nothing beats a run in the Bowl. Now, boasting over 2,400 feet of vertical, three runs on the bowl and you can call it an amazing ski day. And with the new Deep Temerity lift, you can ski out on a short, wide catwalk and take a quick lift back up to the top and begin hiking all over again.

Downhill Racing in Aspen a Real Thrill

I'm back in the saddle in alpine ski racing after being side-lined for nearly six years after blowing my knee out in the '99 town downhill. Over the past ten days, I competed in three Super-G's races, ran a total of ten downhill training runs, and three downhill races between the Aspen Town Downhill and the Rocky Mountain Masters. Finally was able to get going really fast last weekend as I was able to hang within five seconds of last year's Master's Downhill Champion as well as former Canadian and U.S. Ski Team members on a course that was nearly a minute and a half long.

Here's a copy of the racer's view perspective from the first training run of last weekend's Rocky Mountain Master's downhill on the Tiehack side of Buttermilk. I posted a time of 1:33.15 on this run, and improved on this initial training run by more than five seconds in the following day's race (which was run without the distraction of the hemut-cam). Fastest time on race day was 1:22.98 (posted by Franzie), covering this amazingly fun 1.5 mile-long course from top-to-bottom with an average speed of about 64 MPH, topping out at 71 MPH on the fastest parts of the course.

Aspen Expeditions adds Adventure Travel

Have you ever hoped to ski the European Alps, trek through Nepal, scramble in the Dolomites of Italy, or paraglide from the top of a mountain? Aspen Expeditions, founded by Aspen local Dick Jackson in 1978, has now added to its list of activities by offering new adventure travel to various national and international locations. Aspen Expeditions is promoting Aspen, Colorado as a destination for adventure travel, including such trips as "The Aspen Seven Summits" and the "Maroon Bells Trek." Other featured trips done internationally include a ski along the European Haute Route, a trek through the Gokyo and Khumbu Valleys, and many more. Learn more about Aspen Expeditions Adventure Travel by going to aspenexpeditions.com.

Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to accompany some of the Aspen Expeditions staff and locals on a trip up to the infamous Highlands Bowl in Aspen, Colorado. Click below to check out some footage of the exhilarating hike to the top of the ridge, right before an amazing ski down.
