Filmfest Gears Up for 28th Annual Fall Festival

The Aspen Filmfest just issed the below press release:

May 30, 2006 (Aspen, Colo.) - Timed to a rainbow of changing fall foliage, Aspen Filmfest's 28th edition kicks off September 26 - October 1 at Aspen's historic Wheeler Opera House, Carbondale's Crystal Theatre, and the Springs Theatre in Glenwood Springs.

Considered this mountain resort's favorite fall party, Aspen Filmfest attracts movie lovers from around the country eager to preview some of the season's most anticipated releases, alongside acclaimed hits from the international festival circuit. They will also enjoy Aspen Filmfest's annual centerpiece, the Independent by Nature Award. Recent tributes have celebrated such film luminaries as Rob Reiner, Michael Douglas, Anjelica Huston and William H. Macy. Other special presentations including a family program round out the program.

Discussing Aspen Filmfest's growth, executive director Laura Thielen observes: "Increasingly, we're becoming a destination festival for people seeking a high quality mix of features, documentaries, and special presentations in a truly spectacular setting. For many movie lovers, Filmfest offers the key ingredients of a wonderful time: great movies, great restaurants and lodges, and magical scenery. Our audience treasures Filmfest as a 'small town' event in the best, most genuine sense of the word — we're manageable, affordable, and above all, convivial and fun."

Recent Aspen Filmfest audiences have had the pleasure of mingling with actors and directors like Kathy Bates, Felicity Huffman, Sydney Pollock (Tootsie), Bob Rafelson (Five Easy Pieces), and William Friedkin (The French Connection). Morgan Spurlock (SuperSize Me), Zana Briski (Born Into Brothels), and Jeff Katz (Spellbound) are just a few who have brought their documentaries to Aspen in advance of receiving Oscar accolades. Filmfest participants have been among the first to see critical hits like Capote, Transamerica, The Squid and the Whale, The Station Agent, The Best of Youth, Motorcycle Diaries, Tarnation, and more.

The complete festival program will be announced right after Labor Day. Tickets go on sale September 19 through the Wheeler Box Office in Aspen and other locations. For more information on this and other Aspen Filmfest events and programs, please visit www.aspenfilm.org.

The "star" dogs will then be auctioned off on August 1st in Aspen - the proceeds of which will support Aspen Filmfest's extensive year-round youth education programs.

For those not able to attend the benefit auction, additional celebrity dogs will be auctioned off-online-through Charity Folks (www.charityfolks.com) September 4 - 20, 2006. Look for Aspen Filmfest's Best in Show splash page on the Charity Folks website starting in June.

Sailing in Aspen/Snowmass - Roaring Fork Valley

Lise Adams a Local Vacation Expert enjoys sailing in the summer - she says:

My favorite summer activity is going sailing at Ruedi Reservoir in Basalt (12 miles from Aspen / Snowmass). The reservoir is never crowded with boats.

The water is cold, but family's love to fish, hike, bike, sea kayak, sail, motor boat, wave runner, water skiing, camp, and picnic up there. In addition the 14 mile drive along the frying pan river is beautiful. This is also one of the local favorite road rides. You will see typical farm animals, deer and long horn sheep along the way. The pass to Eagle (through Meredith) can be a rough mountain bike ride, but also fun.

    Sailing Aspen / Snowmass

When driving up to Ruedi Reservoir you first see Ruedi Dam and shortly after that a few hundred feet up the road you will see the main boat launch, camping and a picnic area. There are 4 campgrounds along the Reservoir with 81 campsites. There are also 2 boat-launching ramps with 997 acres of recreation surface. The facilities are closed in the winter due the icy snowy weather.

    Directions:
On the Fryingpan River about 15 miles east of Basalt, Colorado and 30 miles southeast of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Take State Road 82 about 30 miles south of Glenwood Springs to reach road leading to Basalt. Happy Sailing!
