OCTOBER 11-13, 2006 High Profile Resorts and Communities are Taking Action on Global Warming
Here is the latest news release from Aspen Skiing Company:
Presented by: The City of Aspen Canary Initiative
Supported by: Alpine Bank, Bonneville Environmental Foundation, Johnson Controls, Shaw Construction, and Sustainable Travel International
Aspen, Colo, September 14, 2006- Business, government and community leaders from around the country will convene October 11-13th in Aspen, at Aspen Meadows, home of the Aspen Institute, to learn about emerging policies and initiatives underway to stop global warming. The goal for this conference is to provide the models and resources necessary for all sectors of acommunity or organization to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in a cost-effective manner. www.SustainableConferences.com
Surrounded by 14,000 foot peaks and stunning fall colors, resort operators, business leaders, government and non-government entities will immerse in the basic science, challenges, and strategies underway to address our warming climate. Not intended as a scientific debate, this action-oriented conference presents an array of solutions already in the works within leading communities and businesses. Tours, films, presentations, small group workshops and networking receptions will offer chances to learn from and connect directly with national leaders.
Aspen Skiing Company's president & CEO Pat O'Donnell anddirector of environmental affairs Auden Schendler join City of Aspen's Dan Richardson, Stephen Kanipe, anda cadre of progressive leaders and educators from around the country including GreenPrint Denver's Beth Conover, Xanterra Parks and Resorts' Chris Lane, City of Portland's Michael Armstrong, Department of Energy's Doug Seiter, Sentech Inc / State of Hawaii's Jonathan Hurwitch, New Belgium Brewing Company CEO and President Kim Jordan, Burlington Vermonts' Deb Sachs, and Vail Resorts' CEO Rob Katz.
"The city of Aspen released a study that provides the best possible scientific guess as to what will happen to Aspen as a result of climate change. The results are stunning. In a moderate case scenario, which includes emissions reduction, Aspen would experience 6 degrees of warming by 2100, giving us the climate of Los Alamos, and eliminating skiing here. Even by 2050 skiing will be severely hampered, and perhaps gone. I won't even discuss what happens under a 'business as usual' strategy", offers Pat O'Donnell, CEO of Aspen Skiing Company.

Celtic Games bring highlands competitions & celebrations to Snowmass Village for second year: September 23, 2006
Here is the latest press release from Snowmass Village:

(Snowmass Village, CO) If you think summer sports like mountainboarding, distance running, and peak bagging look hard, try repeatedly throwing a 16 foot log end over end, shotputting a 28 pound rock, pitchforking heavy burlap bags and metal weights over a high jump bar, and tossing a handled metal weight like a discus thrower as far as you can -- all in one day.
"The Celtic Games are a great addition to Snowmass' fall schedule," says Susan Hamley, Marketing Director for the town of Snowmass Village. "These competitions are fascinating to watch— and even try if you're brave enough, and the Celtic Games provide the perfect opportunity to get outside and enjoy the fabulous fall weather and gorgeous views in Snowmass. The leaves here are already turning a stunning gold and red."
The Celtic Games, which return to Snowmass Village for a second year on September 23, have defined the word "tough" since 1057 A.D. when Scottish men began testing their strength against each other at highlands gatherings. Originally, the Scotts incorporated into their competitions items available locally, such as a pitchfork, a tree, and stones. Today's games continue these traditions and require unique strength, skill, and endurance, as the athlete typically competes in up to 7 events in one day. In Colorado, highlands games have been held regionally since 1962, and the Rocky Mountain Scottish Athletes association has supported these competitions as the officiating body for over 25 years.
At Snowmass Village, spectators will be treated to the impressive and dramatic competitions of:
The Clachneart or "Stone." Similar to the modern day shotput, competitors must hurl a 16-28 pound stone with one hand. They're given a 7.5 foot run up to a toe board that they're not allowed to touch or cross.
The Weight Throw for Distance. Athletes use a 56# steelyard metal weight with a chain or handle to throw for distance with a 9 foot run-up to a toe board allowed. The most popular style is to spin like a discuss thrower, and the weights are derived from the unit of weight measure in Scotland, where one stone equals 14 pounds.
The Weight over the Bar. This competition involves tossing with only one hand a 56# weight with attached handle over a horizontal bar that is increasingly raised until all but one competitor fails to throw over the top.
The Sheaf Toss. Using a pitchfork, the athletes hurl a 20# burlap bag stuffed with straw over a horizontal bar raised between two standards, which is raised in 1-2 foot increments.
The Caber. The centerpiece of the modern Highland Games, the caber requires strength, balance, and timing. Athletes hoists the caber, a tapered log approximately 16-20 feet long and weighing 60-140#, into cradled hands and attempt to run briefly and heave the caber up and over to ground the heavy end and let the lighter end fall forward.
Each competition offers Women, Men Open Amateur, Men Novice (For locals and newcomers who want to test out their Scottish mettle), Masters (40+ in age), and Lightweight (190 lbs and under) classes. Test your mettle against friends, co-workers, and rival businesses—local competitive spirit is encouraged!
In addition to athletic prowess, this festival also offers music & dance. The Crowlin Ferlies, a bluegrass/old-time/Celtic act featuring members of the Flying Dog Bluegrass Band, Lone Pine Bluegrass Band and Last Minute String Band, perform, as do the Colorado Skye Pipe & Drum Band. Also on hand will be Scottish vendors, wares and food, and different Clans providing information on their heritage.

HARRISON FORD, STEPHEN FREAR'S LATEST FEATURE & NEW DIXIE CHICKS DOCUMENTARY BY BARBARA KOPPLE COMING TO 28TH ANNUAL ASPEN FILMFEST
Here is the latest press release from Aspen Filmfest:
September 7, 2006 (Aspen, Colo.) - The 28th annual Aspen Filmfest runs September 26 through October 1, 2006, in Aspen, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs. For six days this resort valley's favorite fall party will host advance previews of new films and award-winning documentaries from six of seven continents, as well as a tribute to Harrison Ford. With the chance to be among the first in the States to see some films, as well as enjoy highlights from the festival circuit, Aspen audiences will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite feature and documentary. Tickets go on sale to the general public on September 19 and the full schedule (with film descriptions) is available at www.aspenfilm.org. For more information, call 970.925.6882.
Executive director of Aspen Filmfest, Laura Thielen, observes: "Every year we strive to capture and distill the vast movie landscape into a succinct program that will entertain and enthrall. With features and documentaries from the U.S., Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Australia, our lineup is an exciting mix of new work that has been blazing the international circuit. Whether it's a live conversation with Harrison Ford or the first-ever Aboriginal feature, this edition of Aspen Filmfest puts the emphasis on discovering the original in filmmaking."
Harrison Ford
Among this year's highlights, Harrison Ford will be honored with Aspen Filmfest's Independent by Nature Award in recognition of his tremendous contribution to modern cinema. The tribute will take place Saturday, September 30 at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen and will be followed by a benefit dinner at The Little Nell. An Oscar and Golden Globe nominee, Ford has proven over decades of work (including 39 feature films) that he is the action hero, the tentative romantic, the deeply committed cop and so much more. Some of his standout performances include Blade Runner, Working Girl, Witness, The Mosquito Coast, Sabrina, The Fugitive, Patriot Games, and of course, the Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies. In addition, Ford has worked with some of the greatest contemporary directors, including Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Peter Weir, Mike Nichols and Ridley Scott. Past recipients of the Independent by Nature Award include Anjelica Huston, Sydney Pollack, William H. Macy, Bob Rafelson, Michael Douglas and Rob Reiner.
New Documentaries
Musicians, social activists, and humanitarian adventurers dominate the documentaries showing at Aspen Filmfest. Fresh from the Toronto Film Festival, two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck's Shut Up and Sing about the Dixie Chicks will make one of its first U.S. bows at the festival. David Leaf and John Scheinfeld delve into the Lennon-Ono archives for their fascinating documentary, The U.S. vs. John Lennon. Making its world premier is Mark Harvey's new timely documentary, A Land out of Time, chronicling oil and gas drilling in the West including Colorado's Roan Plateau. (Both screenings of this film will be followed by a discussion with some of the film's principals.) Already on the short track for Oscar consideration is God Grew Tired of Us. Winner of the Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury and Audience Awards, Christopher Quinn and Tommy Walker's film follows the inspiring true story of three Sudanese refugees who come to America. Tribeca Film Festival winner Jesus Camp (Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady) delves into the heart - and souls - of America's Evangelical movement. Rounding out the documentary selection are two modern adventure stories imbued with a deep humanitarian spirit and set in geopolitical hotspots: Beyond the Call (Adrian Belic, Ghengis Blues) and the internationally acclaimed Smiling in a War Zone (Simone Aaberg Kaern, Denmark.)
New Features Including Festival Closer, Stephen Frears's THE QUEEN
Another film to have one of its first U.S. screenings at Filmfest is The Queen, the latest from Stephen Frears (Dirty Pretty Things, High Fidelity, Mrs. Henderson Presents). Helen Mirren stars as HM Elizabeth II in this intimate, often acidly funny behind-the-scenes look at the British royal family and the newly elected Tony Blair during the days immediately following the death of Princess Diana.
Other new features include: Starter for Ten (Tom Vaughan, USA/UK), a frequently funny drama about a working class boy's first year at Bristol University starring James McAvoy and executive produced by Tom Hanks. Winner of the Los Angeles Film Festival Audience Award, Ira and Abby (directed by Robert Cary, written by and starring Jessica Westfeldt, Kissing Jessica Stein) offers a sweetly hilarious take on family, fidelity and marriage. (Actors Chris Messina and Judith Light expected.) Days of Glory (Rachid Bouchereb, France) is a gripping WWII tale with a powerful message whose ensemble cast received the Best Actor Award at Cannes Film Festival in May. From France and Israel comes Radu Mihaileanu's moving epic Live and Become, which has been garnering audience awards on the international festival circuit. A hit in its native Denmark, After the Wedding (Susanne Biers) is a sober family drama with surprising twists from the creative team of last year's acclaimed Brothers. Maria Maggenti's Puccini for Beginners offers a lighthearted, quick-witted New York tale about love, commitment and a surprising triangle. A delight at the Cannes Film Festival, Ten Canoes marks a masterful and thoroughly original collaboration between Australian director Rolf de Heer and an Aboriginal community. Screenwriter-turned-director Jeremy Brock's Driving Lessons stars Rupert Grint (of the Harry Potter series), Laura Linney and Julie Walters in a coming-of-age drama about an unlikely friendship. From Argentina comes Daniel Burman's charming Family Law about a grown son who's not quite sure how to follow in his father's impressive footsteps. Erich Khoo's Be with Me is a tender ode to love, destiny and hope from Singapore. Following a time-honored Filmfest tradition, there will be the annual Surprise Film, also making one of its first North American debuts.
