Aspen Skiing Co. shops earn 2008 SIA awards

SnowSports Industries America (SIA) named Four-Mountain Sports and D&E Ski & Snowboard Shop the Mountain Region SnowSports Retailer(s) of the Year for the second year running Wednesday.
This distinction was based on nominations from representatives and suppliers within SIA, which is a not-for-profit trade association representing the winter sports industry. According to a press release, the shops, both owned by the Aspen Skiing Co., were recognized for continuing brand expansion and the ability to create specialty shops to meet customer' needs.
Four-Mountain Sports has opened several new specialty outlets, including a new Alpine Retail & Demo Center, a Beginner's Magic(tm) store and Four-Mountain Kids this season; and D&E Women, a shop devoted to women's ski attire, equipment and other skiing-related needs last year.
The award will be presented Jan. 30 at a four-day annual winter sports trade show in Las Vegas, where more than 900 brands and nearly 18,000 people will gather at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
SIA is honoring other snowsport companies, including Burton Snowboards, which won the "Best Product Catalog" award.
"Burton Snowboards has played a vital role in transitioning snowboarding from a backyard hobby to a world-class sport," said a SIA spokesman.
Still a privately held company owned by Jake, the company's family of brands includes: R.E.D., Gravis, Anon, Analog, The Program (including Forum Snowboards, Special Blend, Foursquare and Jeenyus). The most recent addition is Channel Islands surfboard company.
Burton also established Chill, a non-profit foundation that works to improve the self-esteem, confidence and resilience of at-risk youth by teaching them how to snowboard.
