LUCKY NUMBER SEVEN
Tanner Hall Wins Skiing Men's SuperPipe; Takes Home Record Seventh Winter X Games Gold Medal
Aspen, Colo. - Twenty-four-year-old Tanner Hall fended off tough competition from Simon Dumont to win the Skiing Men's SuperPipe Final tonight, and he took home his record seventh ESPN Winter X Games gold medal in the process.
Thick snow fell on Aspen/Snowmass as Hall put down a second run that netted him a score of 92.33. Starting from skier's left, he got seven hits out of the pipe (compared to five for Dumont), taking a right side 900 into a left side 1260 with grab, then finishing with a backside 1080.
Hall now holds 10 total Winter X Games medals, including seven golds. He's achieved a three-peat in both the Men's SuperPipe and the Men's Slopestyle, and he currently holds the most gold medals of any Winter X athlete.
Dumont's third run, the last of the competition, wowed the crowd and included a monstrous 20'2" vert out of the pipe on a 720 grab - but his 91.00 on the run couldn't overtake Hall.
"My drive this year was to train for this one event," Hall said. "I'm 24 years old, and at this point this is one of my last big goals at X Games."

WINTER X GAMES 12 GREENER THAN EVER
WINTER X GAMES 12 GREENER THAN EVER
X Games Environmentality(TM): Eco-Action through Action Sports.
ESPN Winter X Games 12 is stepping up its Green profile, adding new features and programs that will make it one of the most environmentally-sound action sports events ever.
Scheduled for January 24-27 at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen, Colo., Winter X Games 12 will build on the successful X Games Environmentality (XGE) program to reduce waste through recycling and composting and cut greenhouse gas emissions through the use of alternative fuels. Sustainable materials will be used wherever possible and an educational outreach initiative for fans, staff and vendors will include opportunities to contribute to XGE's efforts to ensure Winter X Games 12 limits its environmental impact.
Returning for the second year, fans and participants at Buttermilk Mountain will be asked to get in on the eco-action through the TRASHed Recycling Store at X Fest. Fans who "get caught recycling" during the games will be rewarded with tokens they can redeem for valuable prizes at the TRASHed Recycling Store. At last summer's X Games 13, the "get caught recycling" program produced solid results with over 7,000 beverage containers being voluntarily recycled by fans in exchange for fun, environmentally-friendly prizes.
An ambitious waste reduction plan will also be put into play. Specialized receptacles will be available throughout the venue for fans to recycle beverage containers and compost biodegradable materials, such as food waste and paper products. Behind the scenes, additional measures will be taken to recycle paper, cardboard, electronics, construction material and plastic shrink wrap. Last year, nearly 70% of event waste was diverted from Aspen area landfills to be processed at specialized facilities. The goal is to again beat this record.
XGE is also committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and will encourage fans to use biofuel-powered RFTA shuttle buses. Biodiesel, a renewable, nontoxic and biodegradable fuel, also powers snowcats and heavy equipment used at Buttermilk. Use of biodiesel produces fewer emissions than traditional gasoline, helping to combat climate change. Kitchen grease from the staff catering facilities will also be recycled into biodiesel. To further reduce the event's carbon footprint, XGE is also planting a selection of trees on behalf of all athletes participating in Winter X Games 12.
XGE also extends into green purchasing and use of environmentally sensitive materials throughout event venues whenever possible. The event media guide is printed on 100 percent post-consumer, recycled paper and uses a recycled plastic binding. In the staff catering area, cups, plates and napkins are made from renewable and compostable materials, including PLA plastic made from corn and Bagasse, a fiber made from sugarcane by-product.
Aspen/Snowmass has been the Winter X Games host since 2002 and the event will remain there through 2010. Efforts made in the areas of habitat protection and enhancement, energy and water efficiency, green development, waste management, recycling and alternative transportation are what elevated Aspen Skiing Company to serve as the country's Green Leader in the mountain resort industry.

Aspen/Snowmass hotels go to the dogs: High-end accommodations offer specialty kibbles for pet guests
ASPEN - How does braised beef stew sound for $10.50 at The Little Nell or a tenderloin of beef for $12 at the St. Regis? If you have four legs, relieve yourself outside and drool often, you're in luck.
Two of Aspen's luxury hotels have tapped into the growing trend in the world of pet pampering, offering doggie menus that include such items as beef, salmon and hamburgers.
The canine kibbles have been offered as a room service amenity at The Little Nell for a few years. And now the St. Regis Aspen has entered the fray by creating its own doggie menu that features items like the Hot Diggity Dog - an all-beef hot dog cut into bite-size pieces and served sans bun, and Roll Over Rover - grilled salmon with scrambled eggs.
Peder Tillung, food and beverage director at the St. Regis, said management from Starwood Hotels, St. Regis' parent company, recently paid a visit to Aspen and checked out the competition - The Little Nell, which offers a three-item pet menu.
"They came back to me and said, 'Can we top this?'" Tillung said. "I said 'yes' and made something more appealing."
The Little Nell's pet menu includes tenderloin of beef with eggs and rice ($12); grilled chicken breast with carrots and brown rice ($8); and grilled salmon with scrambled eggs ($10).
St. Regis' doggie menu features the "Bow Wow Wow," a boneless chicken breast with root vegetables; "The Barking Dog," a ground beef pattie and the "Canine Round Up," which is braised beef stew with white rice. All entrees are $10.50; however, a 21 percent service charge and a $4 delivery charge is added to all orders.
All of Starwood's hotels allow pets but none of them around the country offers pet menus.
"No other property in the brand is doing this," Tillung said, adding the St. Regis Aspen started the doggie menu about two weeks ago. "You've got to start somewhere."
John Speers, general manager at The Little Nell, said the five-star hotel has catered to canines for years.
"We've always been a pet-friendly hotel," he said, adding pet amenities are becoming the norm in high-end hotels. "I think it's become an expectation among luxury travelers and it's on overdrive here in Aspen.
"These dogs fly on private jets and are part of the family," he added.
In addition to the decadent chow at the St. Regis, dogs are pampered by five-inch thick dog beds with a royal purple cover and ceramic dog dishes. The resort also works with the locally-run Mountain Dogs to provide full dog services, including walking and pet sitting.
At the St. Regis, there is a $100 flat fee per stay, per dog. The hotel also partners with the Aspen Animal Shelter to offer the Adopt-A-Pet Program for guests who want a canine companion while visiting. The concierge can arrange for guests to "borrow" a dog for the day.
At The Little Nell, pet owners are given a small package upon check-in that includes a brass identification tag, a frosted dog biscuit and a booklet called "Petiquette," which details all of the offerings and rules the hotel has for pets.
Dog walking, baby-sitting, grooming and other services are available. The Little Nell charges a flat fee of $100 for their pets to stay at the hotel and it offers pet sitting for up two hours for free.
The Hotel Jerome charges $75 per stay and offers dog bowls, beds and bones. At the Sky Hotel, there is no fee and dog beds are offered. The Sky Hotel offers what's called the "Dog Days of Winter Package," which includes discounted guest room accommodations for three nights, one dog walk provided by Pet Pals, a dog bed and bowls in the room, one bathing and brushing provided by Dog Laundry Mobile Pet Wash and gourmet dog treats provided on arrival by Pink Poodle. The package starts at $166 a night. The Silvertree Hotel charges $25 per night for pets but offers no amenities.

SNOWMASS LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE CATERING TO EXTREME AND FREERIDE ENTHUSIASTS

(Snowmass, Colorado) Renowned as an intermediate skiers' paradise, the extreme and freeriding side of this 3,128-acre mountain has long been its biggest secret. The Town of Snowmass Village aims to change that with a new website dedicated to Snowmass' more radical side.
"Snowmass is the second largest mountain in Colorado, and it offers unbelievable freeride and extreme terrain," says Wendy Harris, web administer for Snowmass Village's Marketing & Special Events department. "We want Snowmassfreeride.com to take on a life and culture of its own and be a free-flowing, user-driven website for a different, more adventurous audience than our main website, www.snowmassvillage.com."
The new website, designed by Promotional Concepts and maintained by Blue Tent Marketing, is divided into three areas: Parks & Pipes, Freeride, and Backcountry. Each section provides detailed information about Snowmass terrain and tips from experts and locals. Additional website options include avalanche and weather reports, music, contests and giveaways, a link to book lodging, and a calendar highlighting appropriate Snowmass events such as the new Winterskol Rail Jam this Friday or regional avalanche awareness classes.
Meant to be an interactive website, snowmassfreeride.com offers riders the chance to post their own Snowmass photos and experiences. Eventually the website also will host video such as helmet cam clips and user blogs as well. In the summer, the website will switch over to highlighting the summer terrain for mountain bikers and boarders and summer events such as Blast the Mass and a new gravity mountain bike event in August.
Snowmass Village partnered with the High Society Freeride Company, Aspen Expeditions, and the Aspen Skiing Company to provide the most current content and photography for the website, which debuts this week online.

SnowSports Industries America (SIA) named Four-Mountain Sports and D&E Ski & Snowboard Shop the Mountain Region SnowSports Retailer(s) of the Year for the second year running Wednesday.
This distinction was based on nominations from representatives and suppliers within SIA, which is a not-for-profit trade association representing the winter sports industry. According to a press release, the shops, both owned by the Aspen Skiing Co., were recognized for continuing brand expansion and the ability to create specialty shops to meet customer' needs.
Four-Mountain Sports has opened several new specialty outlets, including a new Alpine Retail & Demo Center, a Beginner's Magic(tm) store and Four-Mountain Kids this season; and D&E Women, a shop devoted to women's ski attire, equipment and other skiing-related needs last year.
The award will be presented Jan. 30 at a four-day annual winter sports trade show in Las Vegas, where more than 900 brands and nearly 18,000 people will gather at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
SIA is honoring other snowsport companies, including Burton Snowboards, which won the "Best Product Catalog" award.
"Burton Snowboards has played a vital role in transitioning snowboarding from a backyard hobby to a world-class sport," said a SIA spokesman.
Still a privately held company owned by Jake, the company's family of brands includes: R.E.D., Gravis, Anon, Analog, The Program (including Forum Snowboards, Special Blend, Foursquare and Jeenyus). The most recent addition is Channel Islands surfboard company.
Burton also established Chill, a non-profit foundation that works to improve the self-esteem, confidence and resilience of at-risk youth by teaching them how to snowboard.

Heroes of the Slopes Debuts in Aspen at the Wheeler Opera House
Aspen, CO: If you have ever wondered what distinguishes a hero from an average Joe, you need to see this movie. Heroes of the Slopes is coming to the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen on January 5, 2008 for its big-screen debut and inaugural fundraising event. The one hour documentary film showcases the lives and stories of some of the top freeskiers of our time. Besides holding the distinguished honor of being grouped in this prestigious category, these skiers have something else in common: All have experienced medical conditions or physical injuries resulting in the loss of sight, limbs or other ambulatory functions. This film records their personal triumphs as they conquer the slopes as "enabled" skiers.
The film was created, narrated and produced by grass roots director and former member of the U.S. Disabled Ski Team, Marc Romero of One Track Productions in Pine, CO. Marc is a pioneer in the sport of disabled freeskiing with a vision to unite and promote the sport and the athletes. His goal with this film was to create a compelling visual narrative showcasing the lives and experiences of "enabled" skiers who are pushing the limits of freeskiing in an effort to break misconceptions about disabilities.
"These are not people with disabilities discovering disabled skiing for the first time. These are true athletes who push the limits of what we previously thought possible," says Sam Ferguson, the film's promoter and founder of the International Disabled Freeskiing Association.
Along with a team of dedicated professionals like cameraman, Tim Nixon of Baughan Productions and editor and finishing producer, Dwight Prouty of VirtuallyHD, Romero brings us this truly inspirational compilation of images, narrative and courage told from the perspective of some of the leading "enabled" skiers in freeskiing today.
Featured in the film are such recognizable names in the community and the sport of freeskiing as Dennis Murray who was injured in a collision with a tree over 8 years ago, Sam Ferguson, X Games athlete who crashed his mountain bike over a decade ago, Eric Weihenmeyer, the first blind climber to summit Mt. Everest and Aaron Ralston whose climbing accident and subsequent sacrifice of his arm made headlines nationwide. Each of these courageous skiers overcame life-changing events to emerge at the top of their game and give new meaning to the sport.
Distribution of the film is already in the works with broadcasts airing in six states across the nation including CPTV - Connecticut, KCSM - San Francisco, WNET - New York, WPTV - Wyoming, KRMA - Denver and WGBH - Boston (for a complete schedule of dates and air times go to www.heroesoftheslopes.com). The inaugural fundraiser and theatre premier at the Wheeler Opera House will provide a chance to see this inspiring and amazing film on the big screen for the first time.
This event is brought to you by FIG Partners - Ideas and Execution on Financial Institutions. The film starts at 7:30pm and there will be a complimentary reception with refreshments provided by Redwood Wines and Conundrum Catering at 6pm, as well as giveaways from Aspen Skiing Company and Aspen Expeditions. Tickets are available at the Wheeler Opera House or online at www.wheeleroperahouse.com. Get there early for a good seat!
