Lynx to fly tomorrow, but not yet to Aspen
Wed 12/05/2007 12:00AM MST
The new regional air carrier called Lynx Aviation, a subsidiary of Frontier Airlines, will be in the air this Thursday, according to Frontier spokesman Joe Hodas.
"We're on track to be flying by Dec. 6," Hodas said Tuesday. "Once we have the certificate hanging in the office, we can put a plane in the air."
Lynx has been waiting for certification by the Federal Aviation Administration and Hodas now expects final paperwork to be complete by Thursday. The airline plans to use 74-seat turboprop planes made by Bombardier Inc. that will fly under the Frontier name.
The new regional airline has been in discussion with local officials about adding Aspen to its service list, but Hodas said it "remains to be seen" whether that will become a reality.
"No additional service is pending," Hodas said, choosing his words carefully. "There is nothing in the near term right now."
Lynx will begin providing service from Denver to Wichita, Kan.; Rapid City, S.D.; Sioux City, Iowa; Billings, Mont., and Tulsa, Okla. It has already been providing service to some of those towns using different aircraft.
Bill Tomcich, president of Stay Aspen Snowmass, the local central reservations agency, is hopeful that Lynx will someday bring its turboprop airplanes in and out of Aspen from Denver, which is Frontie''s main hub.
"We're standing by and ready to support them as soon as they are able," Tomcich said, adding that he hopes the airline begins service to Aspen "as soon as possible and practical," although he declined to speculate when that might be.
A $100,000 marketing subsidy offered to Lynx and Frontier is still on the table, Tomcich said.
That money was put forward collectively by Stay Aspen Snowmass, Aspen Skiing Co., Aspen Chamber Resort Association, the town of Snowmass Village, and four local lodging properties.
It was hoped that Frontier might begin service this winter, but the delays getting the new regional carrier certified dashed those hopes
While the FAA has apparently cleared Lynx to operate as an airline, additional pilot training would be necessary before the airline could operate its turboprops in and out of Aspen's tricky mountain airport.
"We are a little different than Sioux City, Iowa," Tomcich said.
He said the upside of Lynx service for Aspen would be competitive pricing on flights between Denver and Aspen. That route is now dominated by United.
And Tomcich said Aspen was likely still attractive to Lynx/Frontier because it is one of the few mountain ski markets that could sustain year-round service.

SkyWest Airlines Enhancing Aircraft to
Improve Reliability in Aspen
For Immediate Release
St. George, UT, January 30, 2007 - SkyWest Airlines, a subsidiary of SkyWest Inc. (NASDAQ: SKYW), and the nation's largest independently owned regional carrier, is pleased to announce that as of Tuesday, January 30, 2007, 51 of SkyWest's 62 CRJ700 aircraft have been updated to allow flights into Aspen when barometric pressure is at abnormally low levels. This represents more than 80 percent of the CRJ700 fleet being upgraded since SkyWest first received approval from the FAA on the evening of Thursday, January 18.
The software change makes it possible for pilots to take precautionary measures in the event of irregular barometric conditions, and should mitigate problems associated with those conditions. Safety continues to be SkyWest's first priority, and this FAA approval allows SkyWest to increase reliability for the Aspen community.
"We know this situation has been especially frustrating for the passengers who have been inconvenienced and had travel plans disrupted," said Steve Black, SkyWest director - stations. "Our customer service personnel worked to identify all available options for affected passengers, including rebooking or refunding tickets and arranging ground transportation options when appropriate. But we know what passengers really want is a solution to the problem - and from all reports we're receiving, we're well on our way."
"We anticipate the entire CRJ700 fleet modifications to be completed by next week," explained Captain Dave Faddis, SkyWest Airlines director - flight training/standards. "These upgrades in the software require approximately five man-hours per plane, and our maintenance personnel at Salt Lake City, Colorado Springs and Chicago have been doing everything they can to get these aircraft modified and back into our system as soon as possible."
Aspen's abnormal barometric pressure is a rare occurrence, but is heightened by the city's high altitude at more than 7,800 feet - among the highest of U.S. commercial airline destinations. In normal operating conditions, SkyWest's CRJ700 service has been comparable or superior to other aircraft flying into Aspen. But this winter's unusual weather patterns have placed significant challenges on SkyWest's operation that has historically had some of the best reliability in the country. (The airline was named the #1 mainland on-time airline by the Department of Transportation in 2003, 2004 and 2005.)
Bill Tomcich, president of central reservations agency, Stay Aspen Snowmass, believes that, despite the recent barometric pressure challenges SkyWest faced in Aspen, overall jet service has improved significantly since the introduction of SkyWest Airlines and the CRJ700s this past April.
"Because of SkyWest's commitment to Aspen, we now have new nonstop flights from Chicago, San Francisco and Salt Lake City," Tomcich explained, "along with expanded nonstop service from Los Angeles in a modern jet aircraft that not only offers greatly improved passenger comfort, but is also a lot faster, quieter, more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly than any aircraft that has ever served Aspen/Snowmass in the past."
SkyWest's recent completion rate in Aspen has not been consistent with the airline's overall performance. While SkyWest's Delta Connection operation in Aspen realized the airport's best reliability during December with just six cancelled flights and an overall completion rate of 90.3%, the SkyWest United Express operation realized some extraordinary challenges this past month. A total of 69 SkyWest operated United Express flights were cancelled in December for an overall completion rate of just 77.7%. While the majority of those flight cancellations in December were directly related to the Denver blizzard, those challenges were compounded by barometric pressure issues, which resulted in the temporary suspension of Aspen operations on a total of four separate occasions since December 28.
"While December's numbers are not typical for SkyWest," said Faddis, "we have every reason to believe that with this change, our operation will return to the level of reliability passengers should expect, and saw last week." From January 21 through January 28, SkyWest was at a 96% completion rate. "We know it will take time to regain passenger confidence from the Aspen community, but we're committed to a safe and reliable operation for Aspen. We will continue to push forward until all of the aircraft are updated."
SkyWest Airlines was named the Number One On-Time Mainland Airline in the United States by the Department of Transportation for 2005, 2004 and 2003, years in which they carried more than 40 million passengers. System-wide, SkyWest has more than 10,000 employees and serves a total of 135 cities in 38 states and five Canadian provinces with more than 1,600 daily departures.

United Airlines: Denver Weather Travel Waiver
United is closely monitoring the upcoming snowstorm.

Tips to customers:
We encourage all customers flying in, out or through Denver tomorrow and Friday to consider departing this evening or tomorrow morning.
If you would like to change your travel plans, consider taking advantage of United’s travel waiver that is in place through December 30 by contacting your travel agent, united.com or United reservations.

Denver's Blizzard Causes Aspen Ski Resort Flights to be Cancelled
Below is a press release just issued by United Airlines regarding travel waivers now being offered to passengers scheduled to fly to or through Denver either today or tomorrow.
For those who have not been following the news, the entire Denver Metro area is now under a blizzard warning, I-70 is now closed from Denver to the Kansas border, and United Airlines has cancelled all remaining flights into Denver through midnight tonight and along with quite a few into tomorrow, as well... more than 800 inbound and outbound flights total.
Of course this also means that all 13 scheduled DEN-ASE flights have also been cancelled, along with the six flights scheduled to fly between Denver and Eagle. With just 3/4 mile visibility currently at the Aspen Airport, conditions are also below the required 2 miles minimum visibility needed to land here, so remaining flights that are now airborne from Salt Lake City and Chicago are being diverted to Grand Junction.
There is some good news in that there is currently more than 10 miles visibility at the Eagle County Airport, and with the exception of the flights from Denver, all other flights scheduled to arrive there are still operating on-time. The weather is also fine in Grand Junction, and all their flights are also operating on-time. But the reality is there are no more available seats on any flights into either airport at this point until Sunday at the earliest.
So the fact is that there are going to be at least 1,000 guests scheduled to arrive for their holiday today, most of whom have prepaid for their lodging tonight, who are not going to be able to get here as planned, and may not be able to for some time.
We have already learned that like United, some properties here are allowing guests to move their dates subject to availability. I would strongly urge your property to be prepared for a deluge of such inquiries today, along with a lot of no-shows tonight. It goes without saying that we are all going to be dealing with some very frustrated guests these next couple of days. I just wanted to remind everyone that how they get treated by their first point of contact at our resort here either today or when they finally arrive is going to create a very lasting first impression.
If any other noteworthy developments occur, I will be sure to pass them along. Meanwhile the reality is that we are facing a near complete shut-down of the primary transportation link into this resort just prior to our busiest week of the year with no back-up alternatives even physically possible at this point.
-Bill Tomcich

Airline service takes off
By Janet Urquhart
The Aspen Times
December 14, 2006
Saturday will be the busiest day of commercial airline traffic at Aspen/Pitkin County Airport since 1998, when two now-defunct airlines were serving the local market along with United Express.
Both United and Delta boost their winter flight schedules today, but the resort's expanding air service really hits home Saturday, when 26 inbound commercial flights are scheduled to arrive - 16 from Denver, four from Salt Lake City, three from Los Angeles, two from Chicago and one from San Francisco.
"It's the busiest day the Aspen airport has seen since Aspen Mountain Air flew here," said Bill Tomcich, president of the reservations agency Stay Aspen Snowmass and the resort's liaison to the airline industry. In 1998, with United, Aspen Mountain Air and Mountain Air Express serving the resort, more than 30 flights came in on busy winter Saturdays.
This winter, both United and Delta have been expanding their schedules in response to demand, Tomcich said....Read the Full Article at the Aspen Times

(Jet) Fuel Efficient in Aspen Snowmass
Here is the latest article from the Aspen Times By Scott Condon
When United Express switched its aircraft that serves Aspen, it essentially dumped a gas guzzler for a fuel-efficient model, according to research by an Aspen businessman.
Bill Tomcich, president of Stay Aspen Snowmass, a central bookings office, figured the shift from BAE-146 aircraft to the CRJ-700 could improve fuel efficiency by about 40 percent.
Air Wisconsin used the BAE-146 when it operated United Express flights between Aspen and Denver. Sky West took over operations in April and switched to the CRJ-700.
The BAE-146 had four engines to tackle the difficult logistics of landing and taking off at Pitkin County Airport. While it served the market well for several years, there is no denying it was one of the biggest gas guzzlers in the industry, said Tomcich.
"It had the relative fuel economy of a 20-year-old Jeep Wagoneer," he said.
The switch made Tomcich curious about fuel economy and emissions reductions.
A report released by the city of Aspen last year concluded that a whopping 22 percent of Aspen's total annual greenhouse gas emissions come from commercial flights. Another 19 percent comes from private aircraft, according to the report's inventory of greenhouse gases.
