Dear Aspen Community

I am writing to thank everyone who participated in our very special 30th anniversary celebration we held at the Club this past Tuesday. The event which was called ‘Pursuing Possibilities’ as it benefited three extraordinary individuals in our community: Amanda Boxtel, Leah Roland and Kasie Burtard was a tremendous success. Though the kindness and generosity of the over 600 people who attended, Amanda, Leah and Kasie, who each have spinal cord injuries, raised over $100,000 of their $224,000 goal to allow them to travel to India and receive a promising stem cell therapy.

We hear a lot about how Aspen has lost its soul over the years. Those who attended the event on Tuesday know that the heart and soul of Aspen is very much alive and well.

Amanda, Leah and Kasie’s quest is a dramatic metaphor for the journey we are all on. We are a community dedicated to performance and achievement at all levels. Aspen has always had openness to non-traditional healthcare and the amazing height of human possibilities. In the thirty years the Club has been in business, many treatments that were once on the fringe of acceptability have now become mainstream.

This fundraiser was more than helping a few deserving people in our community achieve a better life; it was about creating a better future for all of us, starting with these three early pioneers. Because of this, this event was important to all of us here at the Club and the larger Aspen community.

I never cease to be awed at the caring, the generosity and the love in this community. Thank you all once again for helping us to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Aspen Club and the timeless anniversary of human ingenuity and the boundlessness of the human spirit.

Sincerely,

Michael Fox, CEO

Snowmass Village announces Chili Pepper & Brew Fest headliner

Here is the latest press release from Snowmass Village:

Snowmass Village announces Chili Pepper & Brew Fest headliner
Hot music, cold microbrews and spicy chili return to "Pepper Hill" June 8-10, 2007

Snowmass Village, Colo. -- Snowmass Village is thrilled to announce that Grammy Award-winning artist Ziggy Marley will headline the fourth annual Chili Pepper & Brew Fest on "Pepper Hill" Saturday, June 9. This three-part festive fusion of spice, ale, and music officially kicks off the Aspen/ Snowmass summer season June 8-10 with prestigious microbrew and International Chili Society competitions and tastings in addition to hot music acts like Marley.

"Ziggy Marley is probably the most prolific reggae artist of our time and an ideal headliner who will appeal to festival attendees of all ages," says Town of Snowmass Village Marketing Director Susan Hamley. ""The Chili Pepper & Brew Fest is a spectacular mix of music, food & fermentation that just keeps getting better every year."

Four-time Grammy Award-winner Ziggy Marley, who won his first solo Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2007, is a native of Kingston, Jamaica, and son of reggae legend Bob Marley. He spent two decades as the driving creative force behind The Melody Makers, a triple Grammy-winning act with his siblings before releasing his first solo album in 2003. His style crafts a soulful blend of blues, R&B, hip-hop, and reggae and highlights his skills as a singer and songwriter. In addition to contributing on a variety of soundtracks and even venturing into acting as Bernie, the Jamaican jellyfish in the animated movie A Shark's Tale, Marley is the founder of U.R.G.E., a non-profit organization benefiting charitable children's causes in developing nations.

Music is just one component of the Chili Pepper & Brew Fest's feast of the senses, and over the past three years since its inception, the festival's popularity has skyrocketed, drawing crowds of 5,000 to Snowmass. Previous acts have included Jonny Lang, Medeski, Martin & Wood and Michael Franti & Spearhead.

"The festival is unique in that in addition to the incredible music, it offers three full days of chili tastings and two major microbrew tastings," says event founder and organizer Josh Behrman.

The festival kicks off on Friday afternoon with the sanctioned Front Range District Chili Cook-off held by the International Chili Society, the world's foremost authority on chili. While the cooks vie for entry to the world championships in the categories of Chili Verde, Chili Red, and Chili Salsa, attendees can sample these spicy creations that often can include as many as 600 spices and specialty ingredients. The elite and invitational microbrew portion of the festival also begins on Friday with a "Best Summer Ale" competition and tasting, while an outdoor concert concludes the first day.

NEW! On Saturday, the International Chili Society kicks it up a notch with the 9th Annual Hot Times Regional Championship and chili tasting that was formerly hosted in Cripple Creek, Colorado. A grand tasting with over 40 of the nation's top microbreweries follows with Ziggy Marley's performance capping off this full day.

Sunday is free to the public as a Local's Day, where local cooks get to strut their spicy talents for judges and local bands perform on the Snowmass Village Mall. Additional bands playing at the festival, including Friday night's headliner, will be released soon.

One of the best reasons to start the summer with the Chili Pepper & Brew Fest is the cost: tickets are only $15 on Friday or $20 on Saturday and include access to the outdoor concerts on Fanny Hill and food, beer, and wine concessionaires. For only $10 more ($25 on Friday and $30 on Saturday), a party pass for ages 21 and older allows unlimited access to the microbrew tastings and to sampling different types of chili each day. This festival is expected to sell out, so attendees are advised not to wait until June to purchase tickets.

Tickets for the festival go on sale April 1 online and all information is available at www.snowmasschiliandbrew.com. To download photos of Ziggy Marley, go to http://www.wma.com/ziggy%5Fmarley/summary/

Color as Decor

aspen art museum

Free lecture and demonstration at the Aspen Art Museum

Thursday, March 22, 5:00 -7:00 p.m.

Learn about basic color harmonies, their psychological and healing properties, and watch a free demonstration of Lazure glazing with local artist Charles Andrade. AAM galleries will be open until 7:00 p.m. as well for visitors to enjoy the Like color in pictures exhibition.

Free and open to the public
What is Lazure?
"....An unusual, more spiritually oriented painting technique, separate from sponging, ragging and typical glazing... Color is a vital consideration in 'tuning' a room for its intended use...the white surface behind Lazure color reflects light back through the layers of glaze making the colors appear to be 'in the space' rather than simply on the wall."

Cracker mixes influences and sounds ranging from classic country music, psychedelia, punk and folk into their brand of "Americana" style rock. Snowmass Village turns "Irish at Altitude" on St. Paddy's Day

Here is the latest press release from Snowmass Village, Colorado:

stpattys.jpg

"(Snowmass Village, CO). Snowmass Village is the place to head if you're in the mood to get "Irish at Altitude" this St. Paddy's Day. For the fourth year, Snowmass hosts one of the biggest St. Paddy's Day parties in the mountains with free live music and shamrock-hued festivities all day long Saturday, March 17.

"We've gathered quite a following in the three years since this celebration was introduced," says Susan Hamley, Marketing Director for the Town of Snowmass Village. "Whether you come for the free music, the Irish festivities or the green family fun, St. Paddy's Day is a great time to visit and enjoy the spring weather and incredible 23 feet of snow that's fallen so far this season."

The party kicks off Friday afternoon on March 16 with a Bud Light Big Air Fridays celebration. The best big air skiers and boarders in the region compete off a 40-foot jump, followed by giveaways, a live concert by the Coyote Gospel Band, and fireworks. Bud Light Big Air celebrates its 5th season in Snowmass this winter.

On Saturday, March 17, visitors can don their Irish party hat and get "Irish at Altitude." Fanny Hill turns green with a giant snow shamrock. Along with the green scenery and Leprechauns handing out goodies all day long, free St. Paddy's Day events and concerts abound. The Lucky Leprechaun Scavenger Hunt on Snowmass mountain offers a pot of golden prizes for both adults and kids starting at 9 a.m. at the Ticket Pavilion, while family fun abounds with Irish costume-making crafts and face painting at noon.

The Colorado Youth Pipe & Drum Band, the only youth pipe band in the Rocky Mountain Region, which also is traveling to the Bagpiping World Championships in Scotland this August, marches through the mall and the Colorado Youth Dancers perform traditional Irish jigs throughout the afternoon. Lest all the jumps, jigs, and bagpipes make visitors thirsty, they can raise a pint to the Irish at the Beer Garden & food tents on the Mall open from 12-5pm, which will be serving Irish fare from The Stew Pot and The Silvertree Hotel. Green and import beer and cordials by sponsors Skyy Vodka, Corolans Irish Crème, and Tullamore Irish Whisky will be for sale. The Cirque Bar & Grill also offers live music by Take the Wheel, green beer and giveaways, while Zane's is planning a green-hued party as well.

The Mall resounds with free concerts by popular traditional Irish band the Crowlan Ferlies and hard-hitting six-piece funk and soul band 8 Trac. Snowmass celebrates 25 years of Fat Tuesday Revelry in 2007

Snowmass Village, CO. Wintery Colorado may seem like an unusual location for a Mardi Gras celebration, but the resort town of Snowmass Village hosts one of the oldest Mardi Gras festivals in the Rocky Mountains. New Orleans natives have made a pilgrimage to Snowmass, slopes for Mardi Gras since 1980, bringing a hefty dose of purple, green and gold spirit with them. Snowmass locals quickly caught on and created an official event that celebrates 25 years of Fat Tuesday revelry on February 20, 2007.

mardi.jpgmardi-2.jpgmardi-3.jpg

"We plan to make this quarter-century anniversary one of the best parties of the season for the whole family," says Susan Hamley, Marketing Director for the Town of Snowmass Village. "From mask-making for kids to crawdad boils, king cakes and late-night revelry, Snowmass offers the ultimate Mardi Gras mountain destination."

This dawn-until-wee-hours authentic fete draws over 3,000 visitors annually and includes traditional Mardi Gras elements such as a madcap costumed parade, king cake giveaway, bead throws, crawdad boils, Hurricane drink specials, and celebrations late into the night.

Snowmass kicks off the celebration early this year with the first of the season's Bud Light Big Air Friday competitions on February 16. Regional athletes huck their best moves off a 40-foot jump followed by music, prizes, and fireworks. On February 18, the Snowmass Poker Run takes over the mountain with participants seeking out the best poker hand as they ski all over competing for a $1,000 cash prize. That evening a free 7 p.m. Bud Light Hi-Fi concert takes place on the Snowmass Village Mall with The Samples, while during the weekend and President's Day Lift Ops will be vying for bragging rights in a Crazy Hat Contest.

Fat Tuesday, which this year coincides with President's Week, starts at dawn on February 20 with the Mother of All Ascensions, a costumed uphill snowshoe race that regularly draws over 250 competitors and also celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. The race begins at 8,500 feet in altitude and traverses up an additional 1,741 feet for $15,000 in prizes. Starting around the noon hour, local restaurants such as Zane, The Cirque, and Big Hoss Grille offer Cajun food, hurricane drink specials, and crawdad boils.

The afternoon is filled with festivities including a Kids' Carnival with mask-making, face painters and stilt-walkers, the coronation of a local King and Queen and a bead throw with nearly 29,000 bead necklaces thrown into the crowds. King Cake giveaways include the grand prize of a snowboard, and the Red Cross will be raffling off a snowboard and Jagermeister jacket as well. The annual parade is filled with floats, bagpipers, a marching band, dancers, cheerleaders, stilt walkers, clowns, costumed revelers and more. Cash prizes will be awarded for best costume, best float, and best use of this year's theme "Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler."

After the parade, the parties move indoors to local hot spots such as Zane's Tavern, Mountain Dragon, Big Hoss Grille, and the Cirque, who are celebrating with live music, Mardi Gras giveaways, and Fat Tuesday drink and food specials.

Shortsfest Program Highlights
While not all special presentations are fully set, two of Aspen Shortsfest's highlights are full steam ahead. This year's highly regarded MasterWorks panel will focus on the art of film editing and include an award-winning who's who of top-drawer talent. With a spotlight on France, this year's Planet Cinema showcase will feature a panorama of recent outstanding French shorts curated by Roger Gonin, program director for the world's largest short film festival, the Festival du Court Metrage Clermont-Ferrand.

Aspen discounts passes for young X Games fans

By Joanne Kelley, Rocky Mountain News
January 20, 2007

Those with proof of their youth will get to ski on the cheap in Aspen next week.
The upscale resort will cut prices for the age 24 and under college-going crowd, which will soon arrive in force for the annual winter spectacle known as the X Games. A pass good for two days of skiing during the four-day event will effectively offer lift access for less than $30 a day vs. the usual $82 daily rate.

But lodging prices will be anything but affordable for those who've yet to book a room for the event, which runs Thursday to Monday.

"To find anything within a reasonable price - for under $500 a night - over the four-day weekend is no longer a possibility," said Bill Tomcich, president of Stay AspenSnowmass, the area's central reservations agency.

Saturday night will again likely be the busiest single night of the year, with occupancy rates at 98 percent vs. 96 percent around Christmas, Tomcich said. And unlike the holiday season, the X Games typically mean the moderately priced hotels fill up first.
"The lower-end accommodations have been gone for a long, long time," Tomcich said. "It's a totally opposite situation from the holidays."

Snowmass Village concludes Winterskol Festivities with midwinter festivities, free concert & fun

Here is the latest press release from Snowmass Village:

(Snowmass Village, CO.) On January 14, Snowmass offers up a "skol" or "toast" to winter with a full day of events as part of the annual Winterskol celebration in Aspen/Snowmass January 11-14. Begun in 1951 by Aspen locals searching for a unique way to celebrate the valley's Nordic lifestyle, Winterskol now encompasses four days of zany winter events from January 11-14 at all four Aspen/Snowmass mountains. Snowmass Village concludes the Winterskol festivities on January 14 with a free concert, Swissbob races, and kids fun.

"We're thrilled to be a part of the Winterskol festivities and look forward to closing out the event with a full day of fun Snowmass-style," says Susan Hamley, Marketing Director for Snowmass Village. "From swissbob mania to face painting to bluegrass music, we've got something for everyone."

The day kicks off with the fourth annual Snowmass Swissbob Races on Fanny Hill where competitors can challenge their downhill moxie on a sled only 12 inches wide by 12 inches deep. In addition to Downhill and GS races, the Uphill Swissbob Challenge involves both a 500-foot vertical climb and a downhill course. Those participating in all three competitions have the chance to win a Super Avalouge (valued at $250) and Leedom Helmets (valued at $100). The first 20 contestants to register receive a free Swissbob sled (additional registrants must bring their own Swissbob, which are available for sale at Snowmass' Aspen Sports store next to the ticket pavilion).

Free kids activities fill the Snowmass Village Mall at 1 p.m. while the Snowmass Village Mall Stage rocks from 2:30-5 p.m. with acclaimed bluegrass group The Wayword Sons, who combine the critically acclaimed songwriting of Benny Galloway, stellar musicianship, and unique instrumentation including keyboards, dobro, acoustic guitar and upright bass. The band's genre-bending sound calls upon traditional bluegrass as a jumping off point for musical experimentation, and their first album in 2006 debuted in the top ten of Billboard Magazine's bluegrass charts. For more band information and press photos, visit www.waywordsons.com. The day concludes with fireworks over Fanny Hill at 7 pm.

Visitors are encouraged to ski and stay on to dine at one of Snowmass' nearly 30 restaurants and bars. Lockers are available throughout the Snowmass Village Mall, and regional buses pick up at the end of the Snowmass Village Mall at 15- and 45-minutes past the hour. Aspen Art Museum: BASSO FREESTYLE WINTER BENEFIT '06

Here is the latest press release from the Aspen Art Museum:

ASPEN ART MUSEUM
DIRECTLY AHEAD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 4, 2006

DENNIS BASSO FREESTYLE 2006: presented by BULGARI, sponsored by ASPEN Magazine

Ski down the slopes and enter the glamorous world of DENNIS BASSO fashions and extraordinary BULGARI jewels. On Thursday, December 28, 2006, the Aspen Art Museum rolls out the red carpet for its annual apres-ski evening of elegant holiday fun, fashion, and philanthropy: Dennis Basso Freestyle at the St. Regis Aspen Resort, presented by Bulgari and sponsored by Aspen magazine. This annual holiday party has acquired the reputation for being both the fashion gala of the year and the hottest cold-weather event of the season.

The festivities begin at 4:30 p.m., with Moet Hennessy champagne and cocktails, caviar, and delectable hors d'oeuvres, while guests peruse an elaborate array of silent auction items, fashion accessories, unique trips, and other desirable must-have items. Then, auctioneer Andrea Fiuzcynski, President of Christie's Beverly Hills, takes center-stage to conduct the live auction portion of the evening. For 2006, event Chair Carolyn Powers has secured some truly amazing live auction items, including a $10,000 shopping spree at Bulgari's Aspen store; a photo shoot with acclaimed fashion, portrait and fine art photographer Patrick Demarchelier; a lavish weekend retreat to Palm Springs; and, a trip to the Finale of 2007's American Idol competition. Dennis Basso has also generously donated a dazzling sable coat sure to be the envy of Aspen.

Concluding the evening is the DENNIS BASSO 2006/2007 winter collection: This season, Basso has chosen a palette of chic blacks, velvety browns, and rich ivory, accented with ostrich feathers, bejeweled with Swarovski crystals, lace, ribbon, beads and embroidery. Says Basso: "The collection is extremely feminine and classic. The cuts and embellishments send a message that this is modern-day elegance. It's not about grandma's fur coat."

Don't miss this extraordinary evening of indulgence, elegance, and surprises. For additional details or to make reservations, contact the Aspen Art Museum at 970.925.8050.

Supporting sponsors of this year's winter benefit are: Dennis Basso, Bulgari, Aspen Magazine, Moet Hennessy, Estee Lauder, Christie's, Flight Options, Sentient Jet, and the St. Regis Resort, Aspen.

Tickets are available at The Wheeler Box Office (970) 920-5770 or at www.wheeleroperahouse.com

Music & Biography:

Prolific singer/songwriter/entertainer Robert Earl Keen is the king of the Texas music scene with "Texas-style" enthusiasm, witty lyrics, and ironic humor that translates into entertaining music. Keen is known for "pushing boundaries, evoking emotions, and inspiring deep thoughts " with great songs that are largely musically diverse.
Robert Earl Keen's most notable project- his new CD- "Live At The Ryman" was released on July 11th, 2006. "Live At The Ryman" showcases the music scene and thrives from Keen's high energy concert experience. Recorded at Nashville's historic Ryman Auditorium, Keen integrates his most popular songs, along with his lively on-stage entertainment. Additionally, a new live DVD of "Live at the Ryman" was released on October 3rd, 2006, and offers the most up to date live video performance from Keen and is a must-have for all of his fans.
"There is just no arguing that the man is a terrific performer who knows how to work a crowd... the crowd on this disc is loud and wildly enthusiastic, frequently singing along with Keen and chanting his name between songs, and Keen and his band serve up the hits just the way the fans want 'em. Keen seems pretty jazzed by the crowd's enthusiasm, and he and his band deliver these 14 songs with a large portion of energy." - TexasGigs.com (Oct 2006)
The Houston native's music career started as a porch-front guitar hobby at Texas A&M University, where he found his ability to incorporate his rhymes into song lyrics. During this time, he and Lyle Lovett became friends and co-wrote a song, "This Old Porch," which both later recorded.
Keen's unique and eclectic blend of musical talents illustrates a homemade fusion of country, rock, folk, funk and blues. He has notably received some of the best reviews of his career for his album, What I Really Mean, which was released in 2005. The critically acclaimed CD, features his hit single, "The Great Hank." Entertainment Weekly writes, "...he shows he's still funny and acerbic, walking on the odd side with 'The Great Hank'..."
The career of Robert Earl Keen, the most successful artist that many Americans have never heard is quite impressive. He's had his songs recorded by George Strait, Lyle Lovett, Shawn Colvin, the Dixie Chicks and the Highwaymen (Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash & Kris Kristofferson); appeared in such prestigious publications as Playboy and Men's Journal; performed on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" and "The Today Show"; and played concert venues steadily for more than 20 years.
"The versatile Keen successfully blends various musical cultures and his set lists are as romanticized as the people he sings about. Having sold-out shows from Maine to Mexico over the past ten years, Robert Earl Keen's superstar status should prove a dynamic performance for all." www.robertearlkeen.com

Celtic Games bring highlands competitions & celebrations to Snowmass Village for second year: September 23, 2006

Here is the latest press release from Snowmass Village:

cletic.jpg

(Snowmass Village, CO) If you think summer sports like mountainboarding, distance running, and peak bagging look hard, try repeatedly throwing a 16 foot log end over end, shotputting a 28 pound rock, pitchforking heavy burlap bags and metal weights over a high jump bar, and tossing a handled metal weight like a discus thrower as far as you can -- all in one day.

"The Celtic Games are a great addition to Snowmass' fall schedule," says Susan Hamley, Marketing Director for the town of Snowmass Village. "These competitions are fascinating to watch— and even try if you're brave enough, and the Celtic Games provide the perfect opportunity to get outside and enjoy the fabulous fall weather and gorgeous views in Snowmass. The leaves here are already turning a stunning gold and red."

The Celtic Games, which return to Snowmass Village for a second year on September 23, have defined the word "tough" since 1057 A.D. when Scottish men began testing their strength against each other at highlands gatherings. Originally, the Scotts incorporated into their competitions items available locally, such as a pitchfork, a tree, and stones. Today's games continue these traditions and require unique strength, skill, and endurance, as the athlete typically competes in up to 7 events in one day. In Colorado, highlands games have been held regionally since 1962, and the Rocky Mountain Scottish Athletes association has supported these competitions as the officiating body for over 25 years.

At Snowmass Village, spectators will be treated to the impressive and dramatic competitions of:

The Clachneart or "Stone." Similar to the modern day shotput, competitors must hurl a 16-28 pound stone with one hand. They're given a 7.5 foot run up to a toe board that they're not allowed to touch or cross.

The Weight Throw for Distance. Athletes use a 56# steelyard metal weight with a chain or handle to throw for distance with a 9 foot run-up to a toe board allowed. The most popular style is to spin like a discuss thrower, and the weights are derived from the unit of weight measure in Scotland, where one stone equals 14 pounds.

The Weight over the Bar. This competition involves tossing with only one hand a 56# weight with attached handle over a horizontal bar that is increasingly raised until all but one competitor fails to throw over the top.

The Sheaf Toss. Using a pitchfork, the athletes hurl a 20# burlap bag stuffed with straw over a horizontal bar raised between two standards, which is raised in 1-2 foot increments.

The Caber. The centerpiece of the modern Highland Games, the caber requires strength, balance, and timing. Athletes hoists the caber, a tapered log approximately 16-20 feet long and weighing 60-140#, into cradled hands and attempt to run briefly and heave the caber up and over to ground the heavy end and let the lighter end fall forward.

Each competition offers Women, Men Open Amateur, Men Novice (For locals and newcomers who want to test out their Scottish mettle), Masters (40+ in age), and Lightweight (190 lbs and under) classes. Test your mettle against friends, co-workers, and rival businesses—local competitive spirit is encouraged!

In addition to athletic prowess, this festival also offers music & dance. The Crowlin Ferlies, a bluegrass/old-time/Celtic act featuring members of the Flying Dog Bluegrass Band, Lone Pine Bluegrass Band and Last Minute String Band, perform, as do the Colorado Skye Pipe & Drum Band. Also on hand will be Scottish vendors, wares and food, and different Clans providing information on their heritage.

HARRISON FORD, STEPHEN FREAR'S LATEST FEATURE & NEW DIXIE CHICKS DOCUMENTARY BY BARBARA KOPPLE COMING TO 28TH ANNUAL ASPEN FILMFEST

Here is the latest press release from Aspen Filmfest:

September 7, 2006 (Aspen, Colo.) - The 28th annual Aspen Filmfest runs September 26 through October 1, 2006, in Aspen, Carbondale and Glenwood Springs. For six days this resort valley's favorite fall party will host advance previews of new films and award-winning documentaries from six of seven continents, as well as a tribute to Harrison Ford. With the chance to be among the first in the States to see some films, as well as enjoy highlights from the festival circuit, Aspen audiences will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite feature and documentary. Tickets go on sale to the general public on September 19 and the full schedule (with film descriptions) is available at www.aspenfilm.org. For more information, call 970.925.6882.

Executive director of Aspen Filmfest, Laura Thielen, observes: "Every year we strive to capture and distill the vast movie landscape into a succinct program that will entertain and enthrall. With features and documentaries from the U.S., Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Australia, our lineup is an exciting mix of new work that has been blazing the international circuit. Whether it's a live conversation with Harrison Ford or the first-ever Aboriginal feature, this edition of Aspen Filmfest puts the emphasis on discovering the original in filmmaking."

Harrison Ford
Among this year's highlights, Harrison Ford will be honored with Aspen Filmfest's Independent by Nature Award in recognition of his tremendous contribution to modern cinema. The tribute will take place Saturday, September 30 at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen and will be followed by a benefit dinner at The Little Nell. An Oscar and Golden Globe nominee, Ford has proven over decades of work (including 39 feature films) that he is the action hero, the tentative romantic, the deeply committed cop and so much more. Some of his standout performances include Blade Runner, Working Girl, Witness, The Mosquito Coast, Sabrina, The Fugitive, Patriot Games, and of course, the Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies. In addition, Ford has worked with some of the greatest contemporary directors, including Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Peter Weir, Mike Nichols and Ridley Scott. Past recipients of the Independent by Nature Award include Anjelica Huston, Sydney Pollack, William H. Macy, Bob Rafelson, Michael Douglas and Rob Reiner.

New Documentaries
Musicians, social activists, and humanitarian adventurers dominate the documentaries showing at Aspen Filmfest. Fresh from the Toronto Film Festival, two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple and Cecilia Peck's Shut Up and Sing about the Dixie Chicks will make one of its first U.S. bows at the festival. David Leaf and John Scheinfeld delve into the Lennon-Ono archives for their fascinating documentary, The U.S. vs. John Lennon. Making its world premier is Mark Harvey's new timely documentary, A Land out of Time, chronicling oil and gas drilling in the West including Colorado's Roan Plateau. (Both screenings of this film will be followed by a discussion with some of the film's principals.) Already on the short track for Oscar consideration is God Grew Tired of Us. Winner of the Sundance Film Festival's Grand Jury and Audience Awards, Christopher Quinn and Tommy Walker's film follows the inspiring true story of three Sudanese refugees who come to America. Tribeca Film Festival winner Jesus Camp (Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady) delves into the heart - and souls - of America's Evangelical movement. Rounding out the documentary selection are two modern adventure stories imbued with a deep humanitarian spirit and set in geopolitical hotspots: Beyond the Call (Adrian Belic, Ghengis Blues) and the internationally acclaimed Smiling in a War Zone (Simone Aaberg Kaern, Denmark.)

New Features Including Festival Closer, Stephen Frears's THE QUEEN
Another film to have one of its first U.S. screenings at Filmfest is The Queen, the latest from Stephen Frears (Dirty Pretty Things, High Fidelity, Mrs. Henderson Presents). Helen Mirren stars as HM Elizabeth II in this intimate, often acidly funny behind-the-scenes look at the British royal family and the newly elected Tony Blair during the days immediately following the death of Princess Diana.

Other new features include: Starter for Ten (Tom Vaughan, USA/UK), a frequently funny drama about a working class boy's first year at Bristol University starring James McAvoy and executive produced by Tom Hanks. Winner of the Los Angeles Film Festival Audience Award, Ira and Abby (directed by Robert Cary, written by and starring Jessica Westfeldt, Kissing Jessica Stein) offers a sweetly hilarious take on family, fidelity and marriage. (Actors Chris Messina and Judith Light expected.) Days of Glory (Rachid Bouchereb, France) is a gripping WWII tale with a powerful message whose ensemble cast received the Best Actor Award at Cannes Film Festival in May. From France and Israel comes Radu Mihaileanu's moving epic Live and Become, which has been garnering audience awards on the international festival circuit. A hit in its native Denmark, After the Wedding (Susanne Biers) is a sober family drama with surprising twists from the creative team of last year's acclaimed Brothers. Maria Maggenti's Puccini for Beginners offers a lighthearted, quick-witted New York tale about love, commitment and a surprising triangle. A delight at the Cannes Film Festival, Ten Canoes marks a masterful and thoroughly original collaboration between Australian director Rolf de Heer and an Aboriginal community. Screenwriter-turned-director Jeremy Brock's Driving Lessons stars Rupert Grint (of the Harry Potter series), Laura Linney and Julie Walters in a coming-of-age drama about an unlikely friendship. From Argentina comes Daniel Burman's charming Family Law about a grown son who's not quite sure how to follow in his father's impressive footsteps. Erich Khoo's Be with Me is a tender ode to love, destiny and hope from Singapore. Following a time-honored Filmfest tradition, there will be the annual Surprise Film, also making one of its first North American debuts.

Here is the latest press release from Snowmass Village, Colorado:

Snowmass Village, which offers over 40 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, will offer free chairlift rides to both NORBA competitors and spectators this weekend August 10-13 during the National Mountain Bike Series competitions. "It is such an honor to host the NORBA national finals," says marketing director Susan Hamley, "and we hope spectators will really take advantage of the free chairlift rides to check out both the mountain biking competitions and the incredible trails in Snowmass."

The lifts are open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily and can be ridden for free by picking up tickets at the Snowmass Village Mall Ticket Pavilion before heading down to the Burlingame Chairlift. Bikes are allowed on both lifts at no extra charge.

The National Mountain Bike Series, which is expected to bring several thousand amateur and professional mountain bikers to town, has competitions in cross country, downhill, mountain cross, dual slalom, super-d, short track, and observed trials events. Riders will be racing within their age category and within their ability. The event also has received the prestigious Union Cyclist International (UCI) designation, ensuring participation from all 50 states and a huge international field of riders vying for UCI points on their way to the World Championships. Team Honda will be in town, as will the Rainbow Jersey worn by former downhill World Cup champion Greg Minaar.

Along with experiencing the fierce competition of internationally-ranked athletes, mountain biking fans can check out Colorado's largest cycling expo located in lots 10 and 11. There they can see how the professional and amateur teams prep for the race and talk to the top cycling industry experts. The schedule of events includes many non-competitive outlets for the entire family with daily demos, clinics, free kids races, and more.

Evenings are filled with entertainment courtesy of Pabst Blue Ribbon, which hosts post-competition celebrations on Friday at the Cirque beginning at 5 pm and on Saturday at the Mountain Dragon beginning at approximately 7 pm. Both venues boast specials and prize giveaways and the chance to mingle with the world's greatest mountain biking athletes.
